Historical Society of Vandalia-Butler: Preserving local
19th and 20th Century history for the edification of future
generations
- Chartered in 1977 and Tax Exempt under IRS Code section
502(c) (3)
- Serving the City of Vandalia, Butler Township and the
surrounding region.
- Located on 9.5 acres near the center of Vandalia.
- Maintains six major buildings open to the public and
furnished to their era:
* 1830's Log House, an 1840's Farm House, an 1860's
one-room School House, an 1880's Barn, and a 1910 Spring House
* A 2001 Meeting House/Shelter House featuring historic
photographs of Vandalia and Butler Township
* Four minor farm outbuildings are also maintained on the
Society's site.
With an aging membership and the costs of preservation always
increasing, in 2005 the Board of Trustees recognized there was a
real danger that at some time in the future the Society's annual
income might fall short of the funding required to properly maintain
its land, buildings and collection. The Board decided to
establish a Restricted Endowment Fund in the expectation that, over
time, income from this Endowment Fund would be sufficient to offset
such shortfalls.
Historical Society of Vandalia-Butler Endowment Fund:
- The Endowment Fund is on deposit with the
Vandalia-Butler Foundation (The Dayton Foundation).
- Income from the Endowment Fund is reserved exclusively for
the preservation, maintenance and capital improvements to the
Society's land, buildings and the building's contents.
- The Society annually solicits its membership and friends for
contributions to the Endowment Fund.
- The Society's Endowment Fund also gratefully accepts gifts
of Securities, Bequests, Life Insurance or other Planned Giving
Options. Please call if you would like more information.

before making a decision on all such donations.
- Contribution checks for the Endowment Fund should be made
payable to the Historical Society of Vandalia-Butler and
